Immigration minister Gerd Leers is planning to speed up the deportation of failed asylum seekers, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

The paper says he plans to amend legislation on refugees so that they have to wait for the outcome of a third and final appeal in their country of origin.
At the moment, asylum seekers cannot be deported until they have exhausted all possible appeals. The paper quoted Leers as saying he recognised asylum seekers have ‘an enormous need to do all they can to stay here’.

‘I understand this, but it is not what we should want,’ the minister said. ‘After a request has been dealt with carefully twice, then that’s it.’
After two requests for asylum based on the same information, asylum seekers can make a third attempt to win refugee status but need to be able to show new information in support of their case.
Last year, 500 asylum seekers made use of the last-ditch appeal. ‘In more than 80% of cases, the immigration service won,’ Leers told the paper.
Last year, there were over 15,000 applications for asylum in the Netherlands. Of those, 12% were repeat requests.
