Wild boar shot dead in Flevoland nature reserve

A wild boar, which turned up in the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve in Flevoland, has been shot dead by forestry commission officials, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.

It is not clear how the boar arrived on the polder, which does not have a direct ‘green zone’ connection to the mainland.
Some think it may have used bike tunnels under the motorway to cross to the polder. Officials hope to be able to identify its origins using DNA samples by February.
‘The boar had to be shot because of the zero tolerance policy,’ the forestry commission said in a statement. This means the wild boar population is restricted by law to the Veluwe and parts of Limburg.
