Roads in chaos, flights cancelled as heavy snow hits Holland

Roads in the central urban belt of the country are in ‘total chaos’ following hours of heavy snow, the ANWB motoring organisation said on Friday afternoon.

Snow and ice have led to long jams in many places, with parts of Amsterdam coming to a complete standstill. A number of roads have been closed.
The ANWB is urging people to stay home unless their journeys are absolutely necessary.
Flights cancelled
Flights to and from Schiphol airport have been cancelled and travellers are being advised to check with their airline.
Friday is one of the busiest days for the airport, as thousands of people head off on a winter break. The airport authorities expected to process 125,000 travellers on Friday.
Public transport
Dutch Rail is running fewer trains in the Randstad area and warns passengers to expect long delays.
In Amsterdam, bus services have been cancelled, and trams and the metro are operating reduced services. In Rotterdam, fewer buses are operating in the south of the city. Regional bus services have also been affected.
