D66 wants ministers to come clean on outside interests

Ministers should come clean about their non-parliamentary business interests, D66 MP Gerard Schouw said at the weekend.

Ministers are required to put their business dealings at arms length – such as through a trust – while in office but that does not mean they are free from influence, Schouw said.
For example, senior economic affairs ministry officials are not allowed any outside business interests and civil servants involved in the energy market may not have shares in energy firms, he pointed out.
‘Tough rules apply to civil servants. Why not to ministers? ‘ the Telegraaf quoted him as saying.
