‘Complete chaos’ on the roads, flights cancelled as snow hits

Heavy snow brought chaos to travellers on Friday with up to 10cm expected in Noord and Zuid Holland and Brabant.

The ANWB motoring organisation said there is ‘complete chaos’ on the roads and the situation is ‘dramatic’ on motorways throughout the central urban belt.
Dozens of flights to and from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport have been delayed or cancelled and passengers are being advised to check with their airline.
The airport’s website was down at around midday because so many people are trying to check whether flights were going ahead. The airport expected to process some 125,000 passengers on Friday at the start of the Christmas break.
Railway services have also been disrupted following a power cut in Utrecht and other problems elsewhere. According to the NS website, train services have been ‘severely disrupted’ because of a number of incidents.
The KNMI weather bureau says up to 10 cm of snow will fall in Noord and Zuid Holland over a six hour period. Up to 5cm is expected elsewhere. Temperatures are around or just below zero everywhere, apart from in coastal regions.
