Air traffic, rail services get back to normal as thaw sets in

Up to 1,000 passengers were stranded at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Saturday night as heavy snow disrupted air traffic, an airport spokesman told the Telegraaf.

Some 2,000 other passengers were put up in nearby hotels.
Although the thaw means Schiphol and other airports in the Netherlands are getting back to normal on Sunday, travellers are still advised to check with their airline because delays are still inevitable, the spokesman said.
The situtation was compounded by a strike by Spanish air traffic controllers.
In total around 125 flights were cancelled on Saturday, the Telegraaf said.
Railways
Meanwhile, rail operator ProRail said it expected normal services to be resumed on Sunday after a number of cancellations on Saturday, due to the frost and heavy snow.
The motoring organistion ANWB says many roads are still slippery despite the thaw.
The heavy snow brought down the roof of an outdoor skating rink in The Hague. No-one was hurt.
Frost
The KNMI weather bureau says there will be frost of up to 6 Celsius on Sunday night and temperatures will remain just above freezing on Monday.
