R&D experts warn government jobs are at stake

The new government’s economic policies are set to lead to the loss of 1,500 university and research institute r&d jobs, experts warned on Monday.

They have written to economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen urging him to make research and innovation a priority. MPs are debating the economic affairs ministry budget on Monday and Tuesday.
The signatories, representing research institutes in the chemicals, food, high-tech, maritime and horticultural sectors say they fear Verhagen is planning to cut spending on innovation by €800m a year.
According to global research by consultants group Booz and Company, top Dutch firms spent 7% less on innovation and research last year because of the recession.
