Brinkman renews calls for PVV to go democratic, widen focus

The populist PVV will on Tuesday discuss calls for more democracy within the party and less emphasis on its anti-Islam message.

MP Hero Brinkman, who called for more internal democracy during the election campaign, has now drawn up a document attacking the strict control exercised by PVV leader Geert Wilders.
The PVV is not an official political party and has no members apart from Wilders, who keeps tight control over MPs and their public appearances.

In the document, in the hands of tv programme EenVandaag, Brinkman
disagrees with Wilders’ emphasis on combating Islam. ‘I am convinced if we continue this trend for a couple more years it will reinforce the image that we are, indeed, simply anti-Islam,’ he writes.
Brinkman also criticises Wilders’ plan to set up an international anti-Islam movement and says he believes Islam is both a religion and an ideology – in direct contradiction of the official Wilders’ line.
In the eight-page document, the former police officer also calls for more freedom for MPs to talk to the press and for greater democracy within the PVV.
No members
Martin Bosma, one of Wilders’ closest aides, has written his own rebuttal of Brinkman’s plans, saying he does not believe in a party with members.
‘Having members costs too much time and energy,’ he says in the document, also in the hands of EenVandaag. ‘A membership will soon tell us Islam is a religion and that two passports are acceptable. Infiltration will be the order of the day.’
In a reaction, Wilders would only say that the PVV plans to discuss Brinkman’s proposal and that he will only react once that has happened next Tuesday.
