Maastricht councillors furious at football club bail out

The row over Maastricht city council’s bail-out of local football club MVV has cost one council executive – Christian Democrat Luc Winants – his job.

In May Maastricht city council agreed to buy the club’s stadium for €1.8m and wipe out debts of €1.7m on the condition the club appoints a new board and other creditors also wipe out their debts.
But councillors are furious about the deal, saying officials kept important facts secret and that the club still had other debtors, despite assurances this was not the case.
The debate which led Winants to resign will continue on Thursday.
