Liberals want to overhaul social security, end welfare benefits

Three-party talks on forming a new right-wing government are now focusing on reforming the social security system, Trouw reports on Saturday, quoting sources close to the negotiations.

The right-wing Liberals VVD want scrap basic welfare payments (bijstand), invalidity benefit for young people and subsidised work for the handicapped, the paper says. Welfare payments are made to people with no other source of income.
But while the Christian Democrats support some of the measures, the anti-Islam PVV is opposed to changes to the benefit system, the paper says.

Unemployment benefit

The VVD and CDA both want to cut entitlement to unemployment benefit (ww), which runs for a maximum of three years. The PVV also opposes jobless benefit cuts, which was one of the spearheads of its election campaign.
This makes it unlikely that there will be any major reforms in the coalition accord, Trouw says.
Despite optimism the agreement could be finalised next week, no decisions have yet been taken on healthcare cuts and increasing the pension age, the paper says.
