Shopping centre wins right to open every Sunday

The Alexandrium shopping centre in Rotterdam has won the legal right to open its doors every Sunday.

The Hague appeal court on Wednesday ruled against a group of shopkeepers who want the shopping centre to keep to the 12 opening days a year set down in law, arguing the centre is not in a real tourist area.
Shops in areas which are designated official tourist areas are allowed to open every Sunday. The outgoing government had pledged to tighten up on Sunday trading by closing the tourist area loophole.
According to news agency ANP, the shopkeepers opposed to opening every Sunday either have religious objections or feel six days a week work is enough.
