Prince Carlos Hugo lies in state

The body of prince Carlos Hugo de Bourbon de Parme, former husband of queen Beatrix’s sister Irene, arrives in the Netherlands on Friday to lie in state at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague, reports the Dutch media on Thursday. The 80 year-old prince died on Wednesday in Barcelona.

Princess Irene converted to Roman Catholicism when she married the pretender to the Spanish throne in 1964. The marriage caused a furore in the predominantly Protestant Netherlands and Irene agreed to give up her right to the Dutch throne.
The marriage produced four children but the couple divorced in 1981.
The prince’s body will be on show to family and friends for three days. It will then be taken to Italy to be buried in the family crypt in Parma on August 28.
