Dutch relay team sets new cross channel swim record

A relay team of six Dutch swimmers has swum from France to England in a record eight hours, 57 minutes, news agency ANP reports.

The previous Dutch record, dating from 1969, stood at nine hours, 29 minutes.
The swim from Dover to Calais covers 35 km and crosses one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
The world record is held by an American team which made the crossing in 1990 in six hours, 52 minutes.
