MPs reject some health spending charges

MPs have rejected caretaker health minister Ab Klink’s plans to introduce €10 fees for visits to physiotherapists and for dietary advice.

The minster said earlier last month the charges were necessary as part of efforts to get spending on healthcare under control.
But MPs did give the go ahead to Klink’s plans to make cuts in the basic health insurance package. This means walking aids, contraceptive pills for the over 21s and dentistry for 18 to 21-year-olds will no longer be insured from next year.
This means health insurance companies now have time to revise their top up insurance policies to offer the extra cover.
