Charitable donations fell in 2009

Charities raised less money from donations last year, with the total amount collected from well-wishers reaching €621m, down €2m on 2008, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

Nevertheless, eight charities managed to increase their income, with the Zonnebloem group, which organises holidays for the handicapped, doing best.
Heart charity Hartstichting, foster parents group Plan Nederland and Kerk in Actie saw donations fall the most.
Fund-raising
The big three Dutch charities, which earned less money but still top the donations list, are the cancer charity KWF Kankerbestrijding, Unicef and the Red Cross.
According to research by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the Dutch charity association VFI, good causes spent €164 to raise €1,000 last year, compared with €153 in 2008.
Some 20% of every donation is spent on administration, staff and fund raising.
