British tv pundit loses job over Bavaria beer World Cup stunt

British tv station ITV has fired its World Cup pundit Robbie Earle for passing on tickets allocated to him to a Dutch beer promotion team, the Daily Mail website reports.

The prime position tickets, given to the broadcaster for friends and family, were sold on to brewing group Bavaria, who sent a team of girls to the Netherlands Denmark match to cause a media stir.
The girls, dressed as Danish supporters, later stripped off to reveal skimpy orange dresses – a free giveaway with Bavaria beer. The 36 women – three Dutch and 33 South African, had prime seats and drew a lot of attention by shouting and cheering, the British paper said.
They were all ejected from the stadium and questioned by Fifa officials for several hours after the match.

When questioned by officials, some still had tickets in their possession revealing they were part of ITV’s corporate hospitality package.
Bavaria beer is not one of the official sponsors of the World Cup.
Originally the company claimed the girls were students who had paid for their own trips to the World Cup. It later transpired they are being paid by Bavaria to promote the beer.

Explanation

Nos tv reports the foreign ministry has asked the South African authorities to explain why the girls were forcibly removed from the stadium.
‘We were very harshly dealt with by Fifa officials,’ spokeswoman for the girls Barbara Catelein said. ‘Some of the girls are covered with bruises. This is not an innocent campaign any more.’
So far the South African authorities have not responded to the complaints, Nos says.
According to the British press, so-called ambush marketing is illegal in South Africa.
