Schiphol airport starts trials of self-scan passport control

Dutch nationals with a new biometric passport will soon be able to leave the Netherlands without being checked by the border police at Schiphol airport, if a trial with new scanning machines proves successful.

The airport authorities hope the introduction of the machines, which cost €100,000 each, will reduce the queues at passport control during busy periods.
Travellers with a passport containing biometric information will be able to use the machines which scan their passport, take a photograph of the holder and compare it to photographs in its data bank.
Although geared up to deal with the newest Dutch passports, other EU citizens with passports containing biometric information will also be able to use the scanners, the Telegraaf reports.
The justice ministry has set aside €30m to buy the scanners if the trial proves successful.
