Liberation flame burns in Wageningen

The traditional Liberation flame (bevrijdingsvuur) was lit in Wageningen shortly after midnight last night and will be carried by a team of runners, cyclists and inline skaters to 140 different locations round the country.

Germany signed the surrender in the Gelderland town on May 5, 1945. Since 1948 the event has been commemorated with the lighting of the Liberation flame.
Some 750,000 people are expected to attend events around the country to celebrate the end of World War II 65 years ago.
Queen Beatrix will attend a special concert on the Amstel river in Amsterdam. The visit will go ahead despite the disruption to last night’s wreath laying ceremony at the Dam war memorial.
