Labour prime minister but Liberals in cabinet: new poll

While 51% of voters expect Labour leader Job Cohen to be the next prime minister of the Netherlands, 47% say the right-wing Liberal party VVD must be a member of new coalition, according to a new poll by Maurice de Hond.

The poll shows 41% think Labour should be in the next government, and 36% the Liberal democratic party D66. Only 33% think the Christian Democrats, currently the largest party in parliament, should be in the new coalition.
Some 38% of those polled hope Cohen will be the next prime minister, while 17% favour CDA leader and current premier Jan Peter Balkenende.
The poll gives Labour 30 seats in the 150-seat parliament, down three from last week, and the CDA 29. The VVD is in third place on 25 and Geert Wilders’ anti-Islam PVV loses another seat to stand on 20.
