Justice ministry to set up citizens’ sentencing panel

The justice ministry is to set up a sort of citizens’ panel which will allow up to 250 ordinary people and organisations to have their say about sentencing, the GDP newspaper group reports on Tuesday.

But while the views of the panel will be important, they will not be binding, Annemarie Penn te Strake, chief prosecutor in the Maastricht region, told the papers.
The panel will first have its say on what should be done about persistent offenders. Later the panel will be asked for its views on violent crime and sentencing.
