Reduce animal antibiotic use by 20%: report

The farm ministry is to take steps to reduce the use of antibiotics in the intensive farming sector by 20%, caretaker farm minister Gerda Verburg said on Tuesday.

Verburg was commenting on the publication of a report into the use of antibiotics in factory farming.
In 2007, research showed 30% of calves and pigs had developed antibiotic-resistent types of the MRSA virus, but by 2008 this had increased to 40%.
The ministry is also to look at possibly restricting some antibiotics to humans only.
