Dutch take eight Olympic medals home

The Dutch Winter Olympics team return home with a haul of eight medals, including four gold, following Nicolein Sauerbreij’s victory in the snowboarding giant slalom on Sunday.

The Netherlands ended the competition in 10th place on the medals table with four gold, one silver and three bronze.
Chef de mission Henk Gemser said Sauerbreij’s win was the sporting high point of the games. ‘What control, race after race… and under such pressure,’ he said.
Sven Kramer’s gold in the 5,000m speed skating and the double in the 1,500 m for Mark Tuitert and Ireen Wüst meant the Netherlands had won 25% of the gold medals in long track speed skating, he said. ‘And we can be very happy about that.’
Kramer’s Olympic campaign ended with a bronze medal in the three-man pursuit event, despite setting a new Olympic record.
2022
Meanwhile, Ron Mulder, Kramer’s manager and head of sports marketing bureau Referee told news agency ANP that the 2022 Winter Olympics could easily be held in the Netherlands.
The lack of hills for skiing could easily be solved, he said. ‘The big dredging companies could and would be willing to build a 1,000m high mountain and lots of other ski disciplines could take place in the Veluwe heathland region, he said. ‘They all think I’m nuts but we will never get the 2028 summer games.’
