VVD backs electronic tags for deliquents

Thursday 25 February 2010

Youngsters who persist in causing a nuisance should be fitted with electronic tags to monitor their movements as well as be given banning orders or house arrest, the VVD Liberal party said on Thursday.

Mayors would be able to order the tags to be fitted within 24 hours, much faster than by court order, the party says.

'This way we can get the troublemakers off the streets,' said MP Ineke Dezentjé Hamming in the Telegraaf.

Earlier this week, the Christian Democrats called for the introduction of special community service for ethnic minority deliquents.

i just laugh when i read such statements. I think then is better to put microchip in their brains and motion controller to control their movement.

As a female who has repeatedly been harassed here, hearing news like this is actually good.

I find it a shame that it has gotten to such a need for extreme measures, but I would rather have extreme measures against those who cause trouble than be caused trouble myself.

It would be nice to walk down a street here and feel safe again.

I know it's going to sound corny and reminiscent of the "soft-left" that seem to get a lot of bashing here, but knowing people that work on outreach projects as I do, a lot of the problem seems to be boredom.

The kids need something to occupy their free time, but youth clubs, cultural centra and even playing areas are being closed down in the major cities - leading to boredom and then before you know it..........

There is a very important issue here - this is planned WITHOUT due process of the law.

The mayor, rather than a court, will decide.

Youths/children will be fitted with a device without having committed a criminal offence, merely for being a 'nuisance'

What is a nuisance? 4 kids on a street corner? Kids playing football? To me, adults with tacky ringtones on buses are a nuisance - we all judge 'nuisance' differently.

Punishment without a fair trial/hearing is WRONG.

John is right, tagging isn't a solution to the cause of the problem. It is just a knee jerk vote winning solution. The solution should be to find the cause and deal with that. Tagging known offenders won't stop new offenders.

The reason for such measures is that the "liberal due process of law" dishes out community service to murders, punishes property owners protecting thier families and allows hardened criminals the "offer" to actually show up to their carpeted cell at future dates to serve a soft sentence and then, by golly, they just decide to run (go figure)
