Fast-tracking planning procedure delayed

Wednesday 03 February 2010

Legislation paving the way for fast-tracking planning procedures until the end of the economic crisis has been held up in the upper house of parliament.

A number of senators have 'fundamental objections' to the new rules, which have already been backed by the lower house, or tweede kamer.

The aim of the temporary legislation is to reduce the permits and planning procedures needed for 58 key construction and infrastructure projects. Ministers believe that kick-starting the building sector is key to boosting the economy during the crisis and will reduce unemployment.

The senate says it wants to hear expert opinion about the implications of the new rules and will consider the bill again on March 16.

Opponents say the fast-track procedures will allow developers to ignore public opinion and environmental objections.
