Crime hotline books major success

An average of 19 people a day are tipping off the police about crimes through the telephone hotline Meld Misdaad Anoniem, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

In total, over 1,200 cases were solved following a tip-off, a 78% increase on 2008.
Last year the hotline received 415 tips about robberies, a 31% increase on 2008,and 240 tips about murders, a rise of 33%. The hotline also received 178 tips about bad driving and road hogs.
Football hooligans are also coming increasingly under the spotlight. The Telegraaf says phone call warnings have led police to stop trouble at several matches.
