62,000 old cars scrapped for money

Tuesday 09 February 2010

Some 62,000 old cars have so far been taken off the roads in return for payments under the government's scrappage scheme.

The scheme, which has a budget of €85m, will continue until the end of this year but will stop earlier if the money runs out.

The owners of cars and vans which run on diesel and were built before 1990 can claim a grant of €750 if they have their vehicles destroyed. The owners of cars built before 2000 can claim a €1,000 euro bonus.

The government hopes the scrappage fee will lead to 100,000 old, polluting vehicles being replaced by newer, cleaner vehicles.

Where are all these new cleaner greener vehicles?
Published research says that vehicles over the past 12 years have not become more economical or greener due to getting bigger and heavier due to comfort and safety features.
