Schiphol passengers down 8.4%Tuesday 05 January 2010 The number of people using Amsterdam's Schiphol airport was down 8.4% in 2009, due partly to the economic crisis and an extra tax on flying which was scrapped in July. In total, 43.5 million passengers moved through the airport. This year, passenger numbers will rise 0.6% but not before things get even worse, Schiphol CEO Jos Nijhuis said on Monday. 'We have almost reached the lowest point,' news agency ANP quoted him as saying. Total aircraft movements were down 8.7% while freight shipments fell 18.4% to 1.3 million tonnes. Nijhuis declined to comment on the airport's financial performance but did say the final quarter was better than expected, ANP said. Schiphol passenger numbers fell 0.8% in 2008. © DutchNews.nl
The added tax was a error in judgment. Once it was in place, flyers decided to look for other options - not Schiphol. These were easy to find. When the cabinet belately realized the tax was as error, it was too late. Flyers had already changed their methods. And many did not return. Greed does not pay! By LJK | January 5, 2010 3:36 PM I don't believe the scanners use 'radiation' of the kind most people think of. I believe they use radio frequency 'radiation'. But then so do mobiles, cordless phones, microwaves, etc. By wilber | January 5, 2010 6:20 PM The primary problem with this airport can be summed up in one word - complacency. There's far too much of it! The management really don't seem to be motivated to solve problems of their own making! I really don't expect things to get better for them, unless they work hard turn things around... By vreemdeling | January 5, 2010 6:55 PM Airport traffic will be up by the middle of this year so don't everyone panic. And why is everyone so worried about the welfare of Schipol -- I wonder -- it will make out just fine. By Buzzer | January 5, 2010 8:21 PM

Did the scrapping of the tax make people less inclined to fly? I presume not, but that's what the text says.
