Haarlem football club goes bankrupt

Haarlem football club, currently trailing at the bottom of the first division, has been declared bankrupt after efforts to find a new backer failed at the weekend.

The club, founded in 1889, has been unable to pay staff salaries for several months and is under court protection from creditors.
The club’s most famous son is former Dutch international Ruud Gullit, who joined as a youth player and later moved to Feyenoord. ‘If there is no income and no supporters, bankruptcy is unavoidable,’ Gullit told the Telegraaf. ‘But I still think it is really awful… I am losing a bit of my history as a football player.’
The club’s last match last Friday resulted in a 3-0 loss against Excelsior in Rotterdam.
The last time a Dutch professional football club went bankrupt was in 1992 when FC Wageningen and VCV Zelland collapsed.
