Freezing temperatures set to continue

Temperatures fell to as low as -14 Celsius in parts of the country on Saturday night and weather experts say the big freeze is set to continue for the coming week at least.

In Stavoren in Friesland province, the lowest temperature of -14.4 Celsius was recorded, while in Leeuwarden it was -12.6. In Berkhout, in Noord Holland, the temperature fell to -13.8 and in Lelystad it dipped below -10 degrees.
The KNMI weather bureau says the cold will continue for the next five days at least, with the strong possibility of it continuing into next week.
But the freezing temperatures are still well above the record – 27.4 Celsius recorded on January 27, 1942.
Transport
Meanwhile, bus services nationwide are back to normal after cancellations and delays due to Saturday’s snow.
And drivers are being warned to beware of slippery conditions on minor roads because of the snow and ice.
More snow is forecast for next week.
Skating
The snow is disappointing skaters who have high hopes of being able to enjoy skating on natural ice, particularly in the northern provinces. The snow stops the ice from thickening as quickly as it can, making the chances of an Elfstedentocht – the spectacular 200 km race between the 11 cities of Friesland – more unlikely, the Telegraaf reports.
The event was last held in 1997.
Nevertheless, officials at outdoor rinks and other natural ice clubs are working hard to keep the surfaces snow-free, so some races can take place, the paper says.
