Contraceptive pill 'out of insurance package'Tuesday 26 January 2010 The contraceptive pill, used by 1.5 million women in the Netherlands, should no longer be paid by the health insurance system, according to new recommendations from the government's health insurance advisory council. The birth control pill was taken out of the basic health insurance package several years ago but put back in 2008. The council says preventing pregnancy is not the same as preventing illness, so the pill does not have a place in the health insurance system. Other contraceptive methods, such as condoms, are not included, it points out. Scrapping the pill will save some €58m a year. The health ministry usually adopts the council's recommendations, Nos news said. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
I have a spiraaltje which is very expensive and it's paid for by insurance but then again, we have above the basic package... birth control should be included in my opinion! Oh let me guess.. they would pay for an abortion though, right? *sigh* By LJK | January 26, 2010 9:29 AM Looks like religious leaders are at it again. Funny that these older men are NOT removing Viagra from insurance coverage. I guess it is important that a 80year old man can get an erection but not the prevention of unwanted children. The planet is straining under the weight of humans overpopulation and religious leaders push for more children? Can someone who is religious to explain the hypocrites voice? By Paul Martin | January 26, 2010 12:14 PM I want to know whether the authorities just to invest more and make population patronize the "gratis abortus" program by terminating the free contraceptive pill? As long as abortion continue to be free then i don't see the sense in terminating free contraceptive pill. I will rather prefer people paying for abortion than to pay for contraceptive pill. By kwabena | January 26, 2010 12:36 PM And how much extra will be spent on providing abortions / pre and post natal care for those who get pregnant because they didn't want to pay for the pill? Not to mention the additional welfare benefits that follow for the next 16 or so years. The pill is also sometimes prescribed to smooth out hormone imbalances. And what about women for whom pregnancy could be dangerous to their health?Where does the line get drawn? By Healthily Unpregnant | January 26, 2010 3:03 PM Hmm! What can I say! I had 'single mother' prescribed by a Neurologist in Holland, "Now you're in Netherlands, get yourself a good woman and .... (censored). We have many single mothers. Stick with the single mothers! take the ...Censored)", and a bit more that I'm sure would cause outrage if I type it here. So ... I suppose they are only creating companions, even maybe life partners for some of us foreigners! Well, I'm in Holland ... I guess it's 'normal' ... I've been told I have to accept Dutch 'ways' now I'm living in, "our country". By Gerard | January 26, 2010 4:50 PM Well I take the pill because I wouldn't be able to work for about 10 days every 5 weeks or so. I wish I didn't have to take it but I don't really have a choice until I decide I am going to start a family. I did have to pay for my pill until 2008 then I increased my health insurance and no its included. I think we already pay enough "eigen risco" and like Paul Martin said Viagra is covered. I personally don't believe in abortion (not for religious reasons) and like 99% of the people believe it is not a form of contraception. We also know that condoms are the best method but some people in long term relationships prefer the pill and there are going to be an increase of unplanned pregnancies I think. By Lin | January 26, 2010 9:00 PM agreeing with the pill but not abortion, Lin, for religeous reasons is folly and factually incorrect. You could still have a fertilised egg present when taking the pill only the artificial hormones released cause you to have a period thus losing the fertilised egg. so please dont go all 'religeous' on abortions when any woman on the pill could be guilty of precisely the same thing though within a shorter time frame.
