Wilders to close Hague councillor list

Geert Wilders, leader of the anti-Islam party PVV, is to take last place in the list of PVV candidates for the Hague local elections in March.

The position of lijstduwer is often taken by popular politicians who do not want to become a councillor or MP themselves but who are placed on the list to boost support.
The PVV’s candidate list in the Hague is headed by sitting MP Sietse Fritsma who says he will do two jobs if elected. Another PVV MP, Richard de Mos, is in seventh place on the list. Wilders was also last on the PVV’s candidate list for the European elections.
The PVV is only fielding local election candidates in the Hague and Almere. Opinion polls put the party in fourth place in the Hague.
Marjolein de Jong, leader of the local D66 campaign, said she hoped Wilders had more respect for the voters. ‘I think voters in the Hague deserve more than this sort of hobbyism,’ she told Nos tv.
