Noord-Holland wants to shoot dune deer

Noord-Holland provincial council has urged Amsterdam to shoot some of the 1,000 deer roaming the dune area between the seaside resorts of Zandvoort and Noordwijk.

The national park is used as a water catchment area for the capital and is home to a large population of fallow and roe deer.
But there are now so many, deer forage for food in the nearby bulb fields or in the gardens of private homes, the province claims. Last week a motorist wrote off his car as he swerved to avoid a deer on the road.
If Amsterdam refuses to cull the deer, the province says it will intervene itself.
The wild boar population in the Veluwe region is subject of a continual cull for similar reasons.
