Marines release 13 Somali pirates

Friday 18 December 2009

Dutch marines have been forced to free 13 Somalia pirates captured two weeks ago because no country will prosecute them, the NRC reports on Friday.

The men were arrested by marines from the frigate MS Evertsen while trying to hijack a merchant ship in the Arabian Sea. The Evertsen is part of an EU anti-piracy force in the region.

Despite agreements with Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles, no country was prepared to take the pirates, the NRC said. Some 150 men are already awaiting trial in Kenyan jails, a Dutch foreign ministry spokesman told the paper.

Anyone know where to find an International Court of Law?

This is pathetic. Now piracy is proven to be a no risk- no punishment lucrative legitimate business. So everybody in Somalia can become a pirate. They should start their workers union.

Quit capturing them and treat them as combatants!!! Then we don't need a court!!

I certainly don't suggest that lonely me can assume to tell the highly paid EU bureaucrats how to run things.....but is it to much to think they should have thought of what to do with the pirates when the EU anti-piracy force catch any... Just some more layers of bureaucrats to pay..How long will Europe put up with them?

The Hague is the location of the ICC and what is the purpose of having such a prestigeous ornamental pearls and marble building without any duties and responsibilities ? Who is paying for the operation costs and the staff of that organization ? Why are we paying the staff of this ornamental body ?

They should have released them beyond the arctic circle.
