Man, 83, is oldest kidney transplant patient

An 83-year-old man has become the oldest person in the Netherlands to get a kidney transplant, the AD reports on Tuesday.

The operation was carried out at Groningen University’s teaching hospital two weeks ago but has just been made public. The operation was a great success and the patient has already left hospital, the paper quoted a hospital spokesman as saying.
The donated kidney came from someone who was over the age of 70, the AD said. The transplant was part of a European programme to make sure elderly patients get organs from older donors. This ensures young patients are not given organs from elderly people, the paper said.
