Kroes: EC telecom portfolio was own choice

The decision to take on the telecommunication and IT portfolio in the European Commission was made by the Dutch commissioner Neelie Kroes herself, reports Monday’s Telegraaf.

‘I was asked to make a choice during a discussion with the EC chairman Barroso. Naturally I consulted with [Dutch] prime minister Balkenende and this is the result,’ says the Liberal (VVD) party veteran in an interview with the paper.
Kroes is currently the EC Competition Commissioner and her switch to Digital Agenda was greeted with considerable criticism as it was seen as a less significant position.
But Kroes dismisses this: ‘This [new] portfolio is possibly more creative and reaches every corner of society. It’s really a post for the future.’
