Call for higher police chief salaries rejected

A call for higher police chief salaries as a way of cracking down on expense claims was categorically rejected by home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst on Friday, reports Trouw.

Earlier in the day, Sanna Eichhorn, head of the VMHP Union, said a higher salary could put an end to the various additional costs claimed by police chiefs.
‘Police chiefs deserve better pay. The salaries are considerably lower than other directors in the public and security sector,’ Eichhorn is quoted as saying. ‘In comparison, the salary of police chiefs are lagging behind to the tune of €25,000 a year,’ she says.
Instead the minister wants a national system for additional costs that can be claimed by the police, says the Trouw. Currently regional forces operate their own system for these expenses.
Earlier this week there was a public and political outcry when it emerged that the head of the police academy has a chauffeur to take him from his home near Leiden to work in Apeldoorn every day by a driver who has to drive down from Friesland.
