Keep art collection intact, pleads Scheringa

Dirk Scheringa, owner of the bankrupt independent bank DSB, has made an impassioned plea for his large collection of modern art to be kept intact.

In a letter to the Volkskrant, Scheringa and his wife Boukje say they hope the collection can be kept together and not be auctioned off as individual pieces.
‘The power of this collection lies in the uniqueness of the whole,’ the letter states.
The collection, said to be worth €46m, includes works by Lucian Freud, Marlene Dumas, René Magritte and Charley Toorop.
Scheringa was in the process of building a new 10,000 square metre gallery to house the collection when his banking empire collapsed.
Last week, ABN Amro seized 1,300 works from the collection as security for a mortgage debt of €32bn.
