Cities will become more densely populated

The number of people living in the so-called Randstad region (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht) will go up by over one million the coming 30 years, according to new figures by the national statistics office CBS on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the polulations of a quarter of the country’s local councils will shrink by around 2.5%. The biggest fall in the number of inhabitants will be the northern province of Groningen, Limburg in the south and the western region of Zeeland.
The total population of the Netherlands is set to rise by one million to 17.5 million in 2040, according to the latest figures. Two years ago the CBS put the figure at 17 million.
