Ahold involved in supermarket takeover

Dutch supermarket sector market leader Ahold will take over some 40 shops currently operated by Super de Boer if its rival Sperwer succeeds in taking over the entire chain, the two companies said in a statement on Wednesday.

Ahold operates Albert Heijn supermarkets.
Sperwer, which owns the Plus and Spar supermarkets, is planning a bid of €4.50 a share for Super de Boer, valuing the company at €514m. Last month, the family owned Jumbo supermarket group bid a total €480m for Super de Boer.
Sperwer has also been given the green light by Super de Boer to begin a due diligence survey of its books.
