Dutch drink less milk, bottled water

The Dutch drank slightly less milk and bottled water last year, according to new figures from the soft drink association FWS.

While milk consumption has been falling for years, sales of bottled water had been on the rise.
Last year, the average consumption of milk was 44.3 litres per person a year, down from 49.3 litres in 2005. Bottled water sales, by contrast, have risen from 18.8 litres five years ago to 21.5 litres last year.
News agency ANP points out that the Dutch are ‘notorious’ refillers of plastic water bottles – probably due to the high quality of Dutch tap water.
Farm minister Gerda Verburg has promised a new campaign to try to encourage more people to drink milk.
