Councils want polling stations to shut earlier

Tuesday 22 September 2009

Polling stations should shut at 8pm rather than 9pm to prevent officials becoming too tired and making mistakes while counting votes, the Dutch local authorities association said on Tuesday.

Traditional pencils and paper voting forms have replaced voting computers in the Netherlands because of concerns about how private computerised voting is. But at the EU elections in June, there were many complaints about how long the votes took to count by hand.

The Netherlands next goes to the polls in March to elect new local councils.
