Youth shot dead at beach festival

The 19-year-old youth who died after violence errupted at a beach festival in Hoek van Holland on Saturday night was shot dead, according to the public prosecution department.


The department said it could not rule out that he had been hit by a police bullet. Police fired warning shots after fighting broke out among the thousands of youngsters who turned up for the party.
One of six people injured was definitely shot by a police bullet, the department said. They are aged between 19 and 23 and one is seriously injured.
According to media reports, police were called to the Sunset Grooves festival after a group of about 80 youths – possibly football hooligans – began causing trouble. Several dozen attacked the police armed with knives and firearms, the Volkskrant reported.
The festival, which was free, had a permit for some 25,000 people, but a spokesman for the ACP police union told the paper up to 40,000 may have been present.
A video placed on YouTube allegedly shows some of the trouble and several shots can be heard.
