ABN Amro sell off plan stalls: FD

Discussions over the forced sale of several ABN Amro units have again reached ‘stalemate’, sources have told the Financieele Dagblad.

The European Commission has ordered the sell-off of Hollandsche Bank Unie and other units before ABN Amro and Fortis can be integrated into a single financial services group. It says otherwise the merged bank would have too great a share of the medium-sized corporate market.
However, the paper says, talks with prospective buyer Deutsche Bank are ‘extraordinarily difficult’, without giving further details.
The paper says ABN Amro now has until mid-September to agree a contract for the sale of HBU, which has 13 regional offices and two business centres.
