V&D asks staff to forgo wage rises

Department store group V&D has asked personnel to forgo the pay rise due to them from July 1, news agency ANP reports.

ANP says V&D is asking staff on an individual basis to agree to give up the rise until February 2010. The 3.3% rise agreed in the latest pay and conditions agreement will lead to job losses if it goes ahead, the company is quoted as saying.
The unions are angry about the request, saying it puts undue pressure on staff. And they have dismissed an internal company poll which claims to show majority support for freezing pay as being untrustworthy.
Meanwhile, the national statistics office CBS says average wages rose 3% in the second quarter of this year, compared with the year-earlier period. In the first quarter, wages were up 3.7%. This shows the effect of the crisis is now becoming visible, the CBS said.
