Tilburg votes against massive shopping mall

The people of Tilburg have voted against the building of a massive out-of-town shopping mall north of the city.

Property developer OVG planned to build the complex between Tilburg and Waalwijk. It would have been the biggest shopping centre in the country.
The city council said last week it would respect the result of the referendum, held on Thursday to coincide with the European parliamentary elections. Some 53% voted against the shopping centre, 46% were in favour.
Tilburg shopkeepers had campaigned against the development, saying it would hit their livelihoods.
