Royals in Amsterdam for Remembrance Day

Security is being stepped up in Amsterdam on Monday as the queen, crown prince Willem-Alexander and princess Máxima take part in the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Dam war memorial this evening.

There wil be fewer places for members of the public, because of the extra security measures, the city’s mayor Job Cohen told news agency ANP. ‘Nevertheless, we have been able to preserve the open character of the event,’ he said.
The annual Remembrance Day ceremony commemorates those who died in World War II and later conflicts. It will be the queen’s first formal appearance in public since the attack on the royal bus at the Queen’s Day celebrations in Apeldoorn on Thursday.
On Saturday, the queen and other members of the royal family did visit the eight people still in hospital after Karst Tates drove his car into the crowd, killing six.

Meanwhile, prince Constantijn told reporters on Sunday he did not think the traditional approach to Queen’s Day, in which members of the royal family mingle with the crowds, should be changed.
The entire family on board the bus witnessed Tates drive his car into the obelisk and each person was dealing with it in their own way, he said. Constantijn was speaking in Amsterdam where he presented the 2008 World Press Photo award to American photographer Anthony Suau.
