Ivanov wins Amstel Gold cycling race

Russia’s Sergei Ivanov won Sunday’s Amstel Gold road cycling race in a sprint finish, beating the Netherlands’ Karsten Kroon and Robert Gesink.

The favourite Frank Schleck, who won the event in 2006, was involved in a crash earlier in the race and was taken to hospital with head injuries.
Ivanov, who was second in the 2002 Amstel Gold, said he was delighted to have finally gone one better. ‘This is the most important win of my career,’ he told news agency ANP.
The Amstel Gold is a 258km race around the hilly part of Limburg in the south of the country.
