Elephants mourn death of matriarch

Elephants at Emmen zoo are in mourning following the death of their leading matriarch Annabel, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

Annabel, at 45 the oldest elephant in the group, died on Sunday after falling into a dry security ditch after a tussle with others in the herd. Although raised out of the ditch, Annabel was unable to stand and eventually had to be put down.
You can see the elephants know what has happened, zoo spokesman Wybren Landman tells the paper. ‘They are standing in groups of three or four… often on the place where the drama took place and digging in the ground.’
The keepers too have been deeply affected by the death, the paper says. But there is a ray of light. One of the female elephants is pregnant and a new arrival is expected later this month.
Annabel’s body has been sent to Utrecht University for examination but she will not be stuffed, officials tell the paper.
