Cabinet suspends talks on crisis package

Talks between ministers on how to tackle the economic crisis have been suspended after another round of discussions ended without agreement in the early hours of Friday morning, report various media.

‘There is still a lot of homework to be done. We will continue on Monday,’ says Pieter van Geel, parliamentary leader of the biggest coalition party, the Christian Democrats, in the Volkskrant.
A package of measures to fight the recession was to be presented today but the paper quotes sources as saying that the chances of an agreement being reached in the near future are now almost zero.
The three coalition parties have been talking for over a week on what steps to take but remain divided on how much should be spent on stimulating the economy, what cuts should be made and when to finance the extra investment.
Arie Slob, parliamentary leader of the smallest coalition partner, the orthodox Christian ChristenUnie, is quoted by the Volkskrant as saying that it is better to take a little more time and come up with a workable package.
