Unions must be honest about training

Unions and employers should be honest about how much money they have saved up in special reserves for training and further education, said several MPs in Tuesday's Volkskrant.

The paper says the unions and employers organisations are believed to have between €500m and €1bn set aside for improving skills.

'[Unions and employers] ... are very quick to ask for help from the government,' Christian Democrat MP Eddy van Hijum told the paper. 'But this is a time when they should be using the money they have set aside for education.'

Unions and employers have set up some 150 funds to pay for training staff as part of pay and conditions packages (CAOs).
